After completing general medical training in Bristol, Bath and Liverpool, Prof. Barnes trained as a neurologist in Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Newcastle upon Tyne. He diverted into the pharmaceutical industry as a clinical research physician in neurology working on antidepressant and anti-epileptic medication before being appointed to a training post position in neurological rehabilitation based with Professor Lindsay McLellan in Southampton, which led to a senior lectureship in neurological rehabilitation at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. This enabled him to complete dual training and in 1989 he was accredited in both neurology and rehabilitation medicine. Between 1989 and 2008 he held a number of senior NHS management positions. Prof. Barnes left the NHS in January 2008 to work in the independent sector and establish a neurorehabilitation centre in Birmingham. Dr. Arno HazekampAdvisor
Dr. Hazekamp studied at Leiden University, the Netherlands, where he worked for over 10 years at the Department of Pharmacognosy, under prof. Rob Verpoorte, graduating with honors in 2001. His PhD focused on the medicinal properties of the cannabis plant, and on practical obstacles to the plant’s development into a modern medicine. Arno worked closely with the only legal cannabis grower in Europe; Bedrocan BV, on projects covering quality control, product development and basic research. He actively participated in the medicinal cannabis program of the Dutch Health Ministry, and was a strong advocate of a more science-based approach on the medicinal use of cannabis. On completion of his PhD in 2007, Arno started a phytochemical laboratory, and was the first to make a wide range of highly pure cannabinoid standards commercially available. He was involved in the early phase of Echo Pharmaceuticals, a Dutch pharmaceutical company developing a sublingual administration form of THC. His validation studies on the Volcano vaporizer established it as a medical device. In 2011, Arno became the Head of Research and Education (R&E) of Bedrocan BV, where he spearheaded many scientific studies with medicinal cannabis, including development of new cannabis varieties and better administration forms, improvement of quality control methodology, and the design of clinical studies with herbal cannabis. Since 2011, he organizes the Masterclass Medicinal Cannabis, a week-long training event in the Netherlands that covers all aspects of medicinal cannabis use. Since early 2017, Arno is an independent consultant for regulators, cultivators and product developers in the cannabis industry.
