Dr. Hazekamp studied at Leiden University, the Netherlands, where he worked for over 10 years at the Department of Pharmacognosy, under prof. Rob Verpoorte, graduating with honors in 2001. His PhD focused on the medicinal properties of the cannabis plant, and on practical obstacles to the plant’s development into a modern medicine. Arno worked closely with the only legal cannabis grower in Europe; Bedrocan BV, on projects covering quality control, product development and basic research. He actively participated in the medicinal cannabis program of the Dutch Health Ministry, and was a strong advocate of a more science-based approach on the medicinal use of cannabis. He was involved in the early phase of Echo Pharmaceuticals, a Dutch pharmaceutical company developing a sublingual administration form of THC. His validation studies on the Volcano vaporizer established it as a medical device. In 2011, Arno became the Head of Research and Education (R&E) of Bedrocan BV, where he spearheaded many scientific studies with medicinal cannabis, including development of new cannabis varieties and better administration forms, improvement of quality control methodology, and the design of clinical studies with herbal cannabis.
